Volunteer with BIMI

Volunteers play a vital role in helping us meet our demands throughout the summer. The volunteer experience offers participants the ability to develop knowledge and skill in a supportive environment.

We welcome applications from individuals of diverse age, experience, ethnicity and physical ability.

Below are summaries of possible volunteer opportunities. To request more information, please contact us at [email protected]

High School Volunteer

High school and possibly middle school age volunteers are welcomed at BIMI. Student volunteers work with BIMI staff to learn about the life histories of locally found species and care of the aquariums as well as how to engage the public in marine science and maritime education. BIMI staff work with students if needed to ensure that the students meet school requirements for community service hours.

Aquarium Volunteer

Our aquariums allow visitors to get close to fish and other marine species found near Block Island. By training to become a Aquarium Volunteer, you will learn to care for the aquariums while facilitating an opportunities for visitors to connect to the natural wonders of Block island through personal experiences with local marine species.

Educational Activities Volunteer

BIMI provides a variety of programming in addition to interactions at the aquariums. Volunteers that wish to provide support in other marine science and maritime related educational programs should contact the Program Director to discuss how they could best assist.

Mentor/Adviser

Do you have a marine science background or a special maritime related skill? Join us in supporting our efforts to educate students, train specialists, study wildlife, and explore the Island’s ocean. Your time and expertise can help to make BIMI a better experience for all visitors.

Special Event Volunteer

Consider joining our crew for our weekly Tuesday Talk series or special events such as our annual Chowda’Fest, or help with a special project such as Coastal Cleanup!
