John Lehman’s favorite pastimes included teaching, boating, fishing, supporting BIMI, stargazing, and sharing stories about Block Island. He found great joy in introducing others to the island he loved and inspiring curiosity about its unique marine environment. Through his generosity, wisdom, and quiet leadership, John became a cherished friend and an enduring part of the Block Island community.

To honor John’s memory in a lasting and meaningful way, the Board of Directors of the Block Island Maritime Institute (BIMI) is establishing the John Lehman Legacy Fund. This dedicated fund will preserve John’s passion for marine education by expanding BIMI’s educational programs on and around Block Island.

The Legacy Fund will support initiatives that reflect John’s lifelong interests and values, including developing outstanding marine educators who inspire stewardship of our ocean waters, fostering an appreciation of the night sky, and creating engaging educational experiences that connect people with Block Island’s unique marine environment.

The Legacy Fund will be maintained as a separately designated fund under the oversight of BIMI’s Board of Directors. All expenditures from the fund will be dedicated exclusively to purposes consistent with the mission of the fund and made in consultation with Sharon Lehman, ensuring that John’s vision and values continue to guide its use.
